About the verbs "is" and "are"

Why in the world that Filipino students have problems with the simple verbs "is" and "are". I could recall my problem when I was in high school and when I answered the test questionnaire in my Third Periodical Examination about Subject-Verb Agreement. For me that was the most tragic part of my student life.
It was Tuesday afternoon. My teacher conducted her English exam and yeah, the subject course is English on S-V Agreement. I was so upset then that after taking the exam I got zero points in one of the tests. I was so pathetic that time. The items were the following:
a) Ten pesos (is, are) not enough to pay for one cheese burger.
b) Milka or her classmates (is, are) invited to attend the party.
c) Some of the forest (is, are) totally damaged because of some illegal loggers.
d) Either the principal or the teachers (is, are) suspended because of collecting money form the students.
e) Physics (is, are) a difficult subject course.
The sentences above made me crazy and frustrated because these sentences are multiplied by two. By means of constant writing, this problem can be treated. So, learn now!
